How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Norway?
Charging an electric car at home in Norway typically costs about 15–55 kr per 100 km — often around 25–30 kr per 100 km at a normal home electricity price. A full charge of a typical 60–70 kWh battery usually lands between 50 and 200 kr, depending on your price zone, the season, and the time of day you charge. That is roughly a quarter of what the same distance costs on petrol, and far cheaper than public fast charging.

The quick formula
Your home charging cost comes down to two numbers:
- How much your car uses. Most EVs use 1.6–2.0 kWh per mil (16–20 kWh per 100 km). In cold winter weather this can rise to 2.2–2.5 kWh per mil.
- Your all-in electricity price. The price per kWh including grid rent (nettleie) and taxes, after any electricity subsidy (strømstøtte).
Cost = kWh used × price per kWh. For example, driving 100 km at 18 kWh/100 km, at an all-in price of 1.50 kr/kWh: 18 × 1.50 = 27 kr per 100 km.
What makes up the electricity price in Norway
The number on your bill is not just the spot price. It is built from several parts:
- Spot price (strøm) — the market price of electricity, which changes hour by hour and differs between Norway's five price zones (NO1 Oslo/east, NO2 south, NO3 mid, NO4 north, NO5 west).
- Grid rent (nettleie) — what you pay your grid company to deliver the power. It is time-differentiated: cheaper at night (typically 22:00–06:00) and on weekends.
- Taxes — electricity tax (elavgift) and 25% VAT (moms). Northern Norway pays reduced or no VAT and a lower electricity tax.
- Electricity subsidy (strømstøtte) — when the spot price is high, the state covers a large share of the amount above a set threshold, which softens expensive months. The scheme's details change over time.
Because of all this, a realistic all-in home price ranges from well under 1 kr/kWh in cheap periods (or in the north) to 2.5–3.5 kr/kWh in expensive winter periods in the south.

Home charging is almost always the cheapest way to charge. Public fast chargers (hurtiglading) in Norway commonly cost 4–8 kr/kWh — for the same 100 km that is roughly 70–145 kr, several times the home cost. Fast charging is for road trips; home charging is for everyday driving.

A petrol car using about 0.6–0.8 litres per mil (6–8 L/100 km) at around 21 kr/litre costs roughly 125–170 kr per 100 km. Charging the same distance at home at a typical price costs about 27 kr. That is a saving on the order of 100 kr per 100 km — which, over 15,000 km a year, adds up to many thousands of kroner.
How to pay less for home charging
- Charge at night. Both grid rent and often the spot price are lower between 22:00 and 06:00. Set your car or charger to start after 22:00.
- Charge on the cheapest hours. Many cars and smart chargers can follow the hourly spot price and charge when it is lowest.
- Spread the load. Norway's grid-rent model charges partly by your peak usage (effekttariff), so avoid charging at the same time as the oven, sauna and everything else.
- Know your zone. Prices differ a lot between NO1 and NO5; the north is usually much cheaper than the south.
